A note to viewers of this page: Although I was surrounded by a phenomenal wildflower bloom, the primary objective of the Salton Sea portion of this trip was to collect and photograph a fire ant species (Solenopsis aurea) at Dos Palmas Preserve north of the Salton Sea. This is different from the native fire ants in coastal San Diego County (S. xyloni) and the introduced South American fire ant (S. invicta).
