Malvaceae: Eremalche rotundifolia (Desert Five-Spot)

Although there were a few diminutive desert five spot in bloom, most had already formed their characteristic schizocarps. This flower image came from Travertine Palms Wash (21 January 2008).

The circular fruit of desert five-spot is technically referred to as a schizocarp. At maturity it splits into many seed-bearing sections called mericarps.
