Wolffia globosa Images

My best images of wolffia were taken with the Bausch & Lomb microscope (left) and a Nikon FM-2 using Kodochrome 64 color transparency film (circa 1980). The red arrow points to a tiny glass bowl of Wolffia globosa with some larger duckweeds (Lemna turionifera). Substage illumination was fluorescent and top lighting was incandescent. No filters were used in the original film images. The colors may not have been true, but they certainly look good in scanned images. The last 5 images on this page were taken with a Nikon D-90 digital SLR. White balance was set to "Auto" on images 1 & 2, and "Incandescent" on images 3 and 4. Image 5 was set to "Direct Sunlight." It is difficult to say which setting is best, perhaps "Auto." The wolffia are transparent green with a speckled, slightly yellowish tinge. With digital SLRs the white balance needs to be carefully corrected to acheive a reasonably accurate color match. This is a time-consuming process.

My Best Image Of A Wolffia borealis in Full Bloom!

Dorsal view of several minute, spherical, flat-topped plants surrounded by larger plants of Lemna gibba. Wolffia sample taken from the San Joaquin River in California's San Joaquin Valley (Fresno County). Scanmned from 35mm Kodochrome Transparecy.

Mixed population of Wolffia globosa, W. columbiana and W. borealis all collected in the Lake Hodges-San Dieguito River of San Diego County. The smallest plants are W. globosa. Scanmned from 35mm Kodochrome Transparecy.
