Spikelets borne in dense, slender, foxtail-like inflorescences.

  1. Group 2: Infl. branches obscure. [Also can be keyed out through Group 5.]
  2. Spikelet not enclosed by spiny involucre (not Cenchrus).
  3. Lemma with one terminal awn.
  4. Lemmas and glumes similar in texture.
  5. Spikelets one per node (not Hordeum).
  6. Spikelets generally all fertile (not Lamarckia).
  7. Florets generally fertile & bisexual (no bulblets as in Poa bulbosa).
  8. Lemma obscurely 5 veined.
  9. Lemma awns less than 15 mm.
  10. Lemma awned from near the tip.
  11. Both glumes shorter than lowest floret.
  12. Glumes alike in shape (not Koeleria or Sphenopholis).
  13. Glumes tough and leathery, not papery.
  14. Lemna tip not 2-lobed or bifid (not Bromus).
  15. Both glumes shorter than lowest floret, awned from the tip.
  16. Inflorescence not one-sided (not Dactylis).
  17. A common, naturalized annual weed.
  18. Lower glume minute (definitely less than half the length of upper glume.
  19. Lemma margin with longer hairs (ciliate).
