A comparison of Wolffia columbiana (lighter plants) with W. arrhiza (darker plants). Species with dark green dorsal surface, such as W. arrhiza, W. brasiliensis and W. borealis appear darker when viewed with substage illumination only. Transparent green species without dark green dorsal layer, such as W. columbiana and W. globosa appear lighter and more translucent when viewed with substage illumination only.
