Ice crystal halo over the Sierra Nevada near Lone Pine, CA (8 Jan 2014). Light refracted through hexagonal ice crystals of cirrus clouds produces the spectrum of color. Depending on the position of the sun and angle of refraction, this atmospheric phenomenon is called a "sundog" or parhelion.
