Lemna gibba population

Shoreline of Lake Hodges in San Diego County, California
covered with a very dense population of Lemna gibba.

Lake Hodges Dam

Pools below the Lake Hodges Dam in San Diego County are a rich site for Lemnaceae species. The rocky riverbed is composed of hard, Santiago Peak Volcanic rock. The greenish pool in photograph contains mostly Lemna gibba, L. minuta and Azolla filiculoides, mixed with Wolffia globosa and W. columbiana. During some years, W. borealis is also prevalent.

Lake Hodges Dam

Lemnaceae species sampled below the Lake Hodges Dam in October 2005: A. Lemna minuta. B. Lemna gibba (side view) showing gibbous (swollen) ventral side composed of enlarged intercellular spaces. C. Wolffia globosa. D. W. columbiana. The lengths of individual plants includes 5 mm for L. gibba, 1.5 mm for L. minuta, 1.0 mm for W. columbiana, and 0.7 mm for W. globosa. Wolffia plant bodies with intermediate sizes between the two Wolffia species are difficult to determine. In general, W. columbiana tends to be more spherical and 1.0 to 1.2 mm in length. W. globosa tends to be more cylindrical and less than 1.0 mm in length.

Lake Hodges Dam

Pools along the San Dieguito River are a rich site for Lemnaceae species in San Diego County. The rocky riverbed is composed of hard, Santiago Peak Volcanic rock. The greenish pools in photograph contain mostly Wolffia species, including W. columbiana, W. borealis and W. globosa.

A population of Wolffia columbiana (A), W. globosa (B), and W. borealis (C) in the San Dieguito River below the Lake Hodges Dam. The darker, more rounded (spherical) plants are W. columbiana, a common South American species. W. globosa is smaller and more cylindrical than W. columbiana. W. borealis appears lighter green and is flat-topped with a pointed apex.

A full thimble

Approximately 5,000 Wolffia columbiana plants will fill a thimble.
