May 2022 Blood Moon

When the moon first appeared above the hill behind my house after 9:00 PM it was a very faint, slightly orange ball. In fact, I couldn't even see it through my trusty Sony DSC-HX60 pocket camera. However, with a time exposure of 8 seconds with a Nikon SLR, the red color really comes through. My images certainly appear brighter red than my naked eye; however, this is exactly how my old Nikon captured it. My 300 mm Nikon lens does not capture the detail of my medium format Mamiya 500 mm lens with doubler that I used on my September 2015 Blood Moon. The latter lens is considerably more difficult to use and requires a heavy duty tripod to support it.

Disclaimer: Some viewers of the above image might think I increased the brightness and vividness of moon with Photoshop. It certainly was not this bright with the naked eye. What made the image much brighter than naked eye was the time exposure and possibly the haze filter on camera. It was also enhanced by sharpening with Photoshop. There is disagreement among some photographers whether images should be unmodified (just the way they appear to unaided eye), or enhanced to bring out detail and beautiful colors. I tend to lean toward the latter. See following image directly from SD card in Nikon SLR.

April 2014 Blood Moon

My 1st attempt at photographing last night's "blood moon." with Sony DSC-HX50. Next time I will use a larger lens! During total eclipse the orange moon was very faint and my lens kept fogging up (condensation) with moisture from early morning dew.
