San Diego At Grand Hyatt (Feb 2-5 2023)
W.P. Armstrong 6 February 2023
Cameras: Sony DSC-HX60 & iPhone 12
A brief getaway trip to San Diego Harbor at Manchester Grand Hyatt. Most of my images were taken through window on 29th floor during dawn, daytime, and dusk. I didn't just sit by my window the entire 3 days. I actually did go outside of the hotel. In fact, Elaine and I walked many miles exploring downtown San Diego, from Little Italy to Seaport Village and the Convention Center. We even explored the interior of the Midway, an enormous ship the size of a shopping mall!

Sunset & Moonset From The Grand Hyatt

If you are short on time these are my two best images. They were taken with a Sony DSC-HX60, a remarkable pocket camera with an extraordinary 30x zoom lens. Distant Navy planes on the main deck of Midway were full frame on my camera, like I was standing close to them!

San Diego Harbor with descending moon above incoming fog bank. The famous carrier USS Midway is at lower right of image. Note: In order to preserve color & detail of the moon, I used different exposure values for moon and harbor background.

The Remarkable U.S. Navy Carrier USS Midway

The USS Midway had 18 five inch guns, plus over a hundred 20 & 40 mm guns. I had many collections before becoming a biologist, including rocks, nails, matchbooks, coins, sea shells, and "bullet shells" (shell casings). My favorite was a 5 inch shell casing given to me by a neighborhood friend who served in the Navy!

Flight deck of USS Midway. Photographed from window (through glass) on 29th floor of Grand Hyatt Hotel with 30x Sony DSC-HX60 pocket camera. This image shows the lens quality of this little camera that was unfortunately discontinued.

Corsair on display in hangar deck of USS Midway. This spacious deck has many 2nd World War planes on display. It is a huge museum 685 feet in length (longer than 3 American football fields)! Steps from this deck lead down to a maze of living quarters, mess halls, laundry rooms, and massive engines. This remarkable ship was longer than than the Titanic and as high as a 20 story building!

The USS Midway is truly a remarkable ship. For more information & photos see the following link to the USS Midway Museum, or better yet, go aboard and see for yourself.
