The Citron Melon

A citron melon (Citrullus lanatus var. citroides) growing wild along the railroad tracks in coastal San Diego County, California. One melon is cut open to reveal the whitish flesh. The yellow flowers are smaller than most cultivated gourd species, and the pinnatid (pinnately dissected) leaves are distinctive among other cultivated members of this fascinating plant family.

Citron melons (Citrullus lanatus var. citroides) in late August along the railroad tracks in Encinitas, coastal San Diego County, California. One plant of this prolific watermelon variety may produce up to 100 melons.
