Eastern Sierra Trip #5

Needle rust on the red fir (Abies magnifica). Spores erupt from minute pustules on the underside of the needles. The spores infect an alternate host to complete their annual life cycle. In the genus Pucciniastrum that attacks balsam fir (A. balsamea), the alternate host is fireweed (Epilobium). Other alternate hosts for rust fungi (division Ascomycota) include blueberries, willows and ferns.
