Paleozoic Red Sandstone Above Sedona

Most of the spectacular red sandstone cliffs above Sedona belong to the Schnebly Hill Sandstone Formation (black arrow). This ancient sedimentary rock dates back to the Permian Period, approximately 290 to 248 million years ago. This was the last major period of the Paleozoic Era, long before the age of dinosaurs. The red color comes from traces of iron oxide. Chart on display at Red Rock Ranger Station Visitor Center, Coconino National Forest.
