San Clemente Island Brodiaea
(Brodiaea kinkiensis)

A rare species endemic to
clay flats on grasslands of
San Clemente Island

Scenic San Clemente Island off the coast of San Diego County:
Home of the San Clemente Island Brodiaea (B. kinkiensis).

Brodiaea kinkiensis, an endemic species on San Clemente Island. It has strap-shaped staminodes with a mucronate or cuspidate apex (with a minute, abrupt tip). The staminodes are not inrolled along the margins. There is a gradual reduction in staminodes in the following three species: B. kinkiensis--B. filifolia--B. orcuttii, culminating in B. orcuttii with no staminodes. Chromosome size also decreases in the same sequence. According to T.F. Niehaus ("A Biosytematic Study of the Genus Brodiaea (Amaryllidaceae)." Univ. of Calif. Publications in Botany Vol. 60, 1971), B. kinkiensis and B. filifolia are closely related and may have evolved from the same ancestral species.

Brodiaea kinkiensis, an endemic species on San Clemente Island. The strap-shaped staminodes are not inrolled along the margins. The apex is mucronate or cuspidate with a minute, abrupt tip. According to Niehaus (1971), this species is closely related to B. filifolia.
