Brodiaea Leaves On Sprouting Potted Plants

Note: The Brodiaea, that I referred to as "Coastal BTK," is listed as a possible
undescribed taxon under B. jolonensis in the revised Jepson Manual II (2011)

Coastal BTK (Brodiaea terrestris ssp. kernensis)

Several corms of Coastal BTK from Otay Mesa were planted in this pot in June 2005. This image was taken on February 2, 2007 and shows a dramatic increase in the number of plants by vegetative reproduction of the cormlets. Individual plants typically have 2 leaves.

Elegant Brodiaea (Brodiaea elegans ssp. elegans)

Several corms of Brodiaea elegans ssp. elegans were planted in this pot in October 2007. This image was taken on December 1, 2007. The sprouting plant has 5 leaves.

San Clemente Island Brodiaea (Brodiaea kinkiensis)

Several corms of Brodiaea kinkiensis were planted in this pot in October 2007. This image was taken on November 22, 2007 and shows a small leaf branching off of the main leaf axis, a total of 2 leaves. Every reference I have consulted describes this species as having a single leaf. Another hypothesis is that this may be a different species because some sprouting brodiaeas in the same pot have single leaves.

Pot A. Brodiaea kinkiensis? with 2 leaves. Other sprouting brodiaeas in this pot have single leaves, so this may be a different species. Pot B. B. terrestris ssp. kernensis from Kern County with 2 leaves.

Pot A. Brodiaea kinkiensis with 1 leaf. There appears to another species of Brodiaea in this pot with 2 leaves (see previous image). Pot B. B. terrestris ssp. kernensis from Kern County with 2 leaves.
