Hydrophyllaceae: Nama demissum var. demissum (Purple Mat)

Purple Mat (Nama demissum var. demissum). The minute buckwheat to the right of purple mat (white arrow) is Thomas' buckwheat (Eriogonum thomasii).

This beautiful flowering perennial belongs to the hibiscus family. The stems and leaves are covered with dense, stellate (star-shaped) trichomes (hairs). It is sometimes called "sore-eye" poppy because the hairs can be very irritating if the eyes are rubbed after handling this plant.
