Crustose Lichens 3: Lecidea? Unknowns

#1. An unknown soil lichen with black, lecideine apothecia (no algal cells in rim). It may be a species in the large genus Lecidea or possibly the genus Lecidella.

#2. A crustose rock lichen growing on San Marcos gabbro. It has small, lecidiene apothecia (1 mm or smaller in diameter) with simple, colorless spores (8 per ascus). The thallus is pale, greenish-gray and the apothecia are somewhat arranged in concentric rings. This species grows on small rocks and boulders in the chaparral of coastal San Diego County. It may be a species of Lecidea or Lecidella.

Hymenial layer of unknown #2 above (Lecidea?) showing ascus with 8 ascospores. The oval spores are colorless, nonseptate and approximately 9-12 µm in length. Magnification 1000x.

#3. An unknown rock lichen with reddish-brown, lecideine apothecia (no algal cells in rim).
