Hydrophyllaceae: Phacelia crenulata var. ambigua (Heliotrope Phacelia)

Boraginaceae: Cryptantha pterocarya (Wing-Nut Cryptantha)

Euphorbiaceae: Euphorbia eriantha (Desert Poinsettia)

Polemoniaceae: Gilia latifolia (Broad-Leaf Gilia)

Viscaceae: Phoradendron californicum (Desert Mistletoe on Acacia greggii)

Orobanchaceae: Orobanche cooperi (Desert Broomrape)

Asteraceae: Calycoseris wrightii (White Tackstem)

The glistening, gland-tipped hairs (trichomes) on the stem of this plant resemble minute translucent tacks. The Jepson Desert Manual (2002) describes the glands as "dark colored" for Calycoceris parryi and "pale" for C. wrightii. Without flower color it is difficult to differentiate between these two species. In my opinion, the actual flattened glands appear pale yellowish, but not dark-colored. Magnification 15x.
