The soil lichen (Acarospora schleicheri).

Magnified view of the pale, sulfur-yellow soil lichen (Acarospora schleicheri) showing overlapping scale-like areoles called squamules. Some squamules contain a dark brown, sunken (embedded) apothecium. Unlike many ascolichens with 8 or fewer spores per ascus, species of Acarospora contain hundreds of spores per ascus.

An orange-red bark lichen of the genus Xanthoria (probably X. polycarpa). There appear to be many small clumps (cushions) of individuals crowded together. The colorful disk-shaped apothecia are less than a mm in diameter. This lichen literally covered the branchlets of oaks in foothills of the Sierra Nevada during April of 2006.
