A fungal spore mass erupting from the bark of a strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo) in the city of Vista (San Diego County). Except for this unsightly eruption, the tree appeared to be healthy.

According to Dario Lombardo (Personal Communication, 24 Nov 2017), this is the spore mass from a canker fungus of the genus Hypoxylon (Class Ascomycota). This is a large genus of fungal cankers, and some species produce brown spore eruptions from the bark of infected trees. In addition, there are many other genera of fungal cankers.
