A fungal spore mass erupting from the bark of a strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo) in the city of Vista (San Diego County). Except for this unsightly eruption, the tree appeared to be healthy. |
According to Dario Lombardo (Personal Communication, 24 Nov 2017), this is the spore mass from a canker fungus of the genus Hypoxylon (Class Ascomycota). This is a large genus of fungal cankers, and some species produce brown spore eruptions from the bark of infected trees. In addition, there are many other genera of fungal cankers. |
