Giant Asian Mantis (Hierodula patellifera)

Large green preying mantis at Hotel Wailea Maui. Probably the giant Asian mantis (Hierodula patellifera).


Jackson's 3-Horned Chameleon (Triceros jacksonii)

Elaine found this Jackson's 3-horned chameleon (Triceros jacksonii) on a flowering sensitive plant (Mimosa pudica) along the trail to Twin Falls. The male is bright green with three horns. The female is brown and without horns.


Spiny-Back Spider (Thelacantha brevispina)

Spiny-Back Spider (Thelacantha brevispina): A small, striking orb weaver spider that is very common in lowland coastal areas. It is closely related to the genus Gasteracantha.


Black-Crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax)

Black-Crowned Night Heron, a resident bird of the Hawaiian Islands.


Coccinellidae: Steel-Blue Ladybird Beetle (Halmus chalybeus)

Elaine found this beautiful steel-blue ladybird beetle (Halmus chalybeus), family Coccinellidae, on a dried kukui nut leaf in Iao Valley State Park.
