Cuboidal Brown Rot On A Lodgepole Pine

Not all decay fungi in the forest are the same. Fungi that digest the cellulose and leave the lignin behind are called carbonizing decays or brown rots. Cuboidal brown rot includes several fungal species that produce cuboidal fragments of wood during the decay process. Other types of wood rot fungi produce splinters instead of cuboidal fragments. In the forest, these valuable fungi convert dead logs back to the soil.

Round Valley Meadow

Primulaceae: Dodecatheon alpinum (Alpine Shooting Star)
