Joshua Tree National Park

A Fascinating Solar Phenomenon

An unusual event in the sky over Joshua Tree National Park on Tuesday 3 April 2018. It was described by onlookers as a "hole in our atmosphere" or "a large eye" peering down at us! Actually, this phenomenon is called a "sun halo." The sky became dark with cirrus clouds and this enormous "eye-shaped" object appeared in the sky above us. It is related to another ice crystal phenomenon called a "sun dog."
