Joshua Tree National Park

Plant List For Joshua Tree National Park

A Perennial Wildflower In The Dogbane Family (Apocinaceae)

Amsonia tomentosa (woolly bluestar), a member of the dogbane family (Apocynaceae). There is also a glabrous form with the identical range. According to Thomas J. Rosatti and Lauramay T. Dempster (Jepson Manual 2nd Edition, 2012), hairiness may be governed by a single gene. A blue-flowered species is a popular garden perennial in the nursery trade.

A Yucca-Like Plant That Belongs To A Different Family

Joshua Tree National Park has two species of Nolina, N. bigelovii and N. parryi. This one appears to be N. parryi. The genus Yucca, including the Joshua tree (Y. brevifolia) and Mojave yucca (Y. schidigera), belongs to the agave family (Agavaceae). Because of new DNA evidence, the genus Nolina is now placed in the Ruscaceae along with Dracaena and butcher's broom (Ruscus aculeatus).
