T he extensive rains of April and May 2020 produced a remarkable display of flowering shrubs and herbs at the Wayne's Word headquarters in Twin Oaks Valley. One of the most spectacular plants was Mexican evening primrose (Oenothera speciosa), a lovely wildflower native to New Mexico and south to central Mexico. This was also an amazing spring for birds and reptiles, but for some reason, not my ant friends.

May 2020 was truly one of the most beautiful springs at Wayne's Word.

The Bright Red Corn Poppy Of Eurasia (Papaver rhoeas)

For the first time a corn poppy (Papaver rhoeas) appeared in my front yard (20 April 2020). This is the symbolic red poppy used to commemorate Memorial Day and all of the brave men and women who gave their lives in World Wars. In fact, this poppy is native to areas of Eurasia that were once battlefields during the 1st and 2nd World Wars. In grade school I remember my dear grandmother selling red "buddy poppies" for the VFW and American Legion in remembrance of all those who fought and died.

S ome people confuse the corn poppy (Papaver rhoeas) with the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum). Although they are both native to the Old Word, I can assure you that they are very different species with very different uses.

My Native Brodiaea Garden Is In Full Bloom May 2020

Brodiaea santarosae in my Brodiaea garden. Taken with Nikon D-90 with macro lens. The flower detail was not as sharp with Sony HX cameras or iPhone 6 & 8.

Brodiaea santarosae (Sony HX60V). I spent many years and thousands of miles searching for these rare California native wildflower species. To protect my Brodiaea garden I lined the soil with with gopher-proof hardware cloth and covered it with netting. Unfortunately, my B. jolonensis from the Hunter Liggett Army Base in Monterey County was left in flower pot too long and didn't survive.

It's Brodiaea santarosae blooming time again. I coauthored this species with Tom Chester and Kay Madore in Madrono (2007). We discovered this beautiful rare species on the Santa Rosa Plateau west of Murrieta. See Fremontia Article
