Borrego Valley Northeast of Borrego Springs Fabaceae: Astragalus aridus (Locoweed) Sand verbena (Abronia villosa var. villosa) & seed pods of Astragalus aridus (right). Asteraceae: Gerraea canescens (Desert Sunflower) Asteraceae: Encelia farinosa (Brittle Bush) Note the minute spider mite (black arrow). Karyn's Raven Wash Nature Trail Asteraceae: Calycoseris wrightii (White Tackstem)--Photographed in 2008 The glistening, gland-tipped hairs (trichomes) on the stem of Calycoseris wrightii resemble minute translucent tacks. The Jepson Desert Manual (2002) describes the glands as "dark colored" for Calycoceris parryi and "pale" for C. wrightii.   See Dark Colored Glands of Calycoseris parryi   Scrophulariaceae: Mimulus bigelovii var. bigelovii (Desert Monkeyflower) Cactaceae: Mammillaria dioica (Fishhook Cactus) Cactaceae: Cylindropuntia ganderi (Gander's Cholla) and a well-dusted ornate checkered beetle (Trichodes ornatus) The Colorful Blister Beetle (Lytta magister) Mating pair on the sand, and vertically while feeding on minute desert poppy (Eschscholzia minutiflora). Lytta magister feeding on a white forget-me-not (Cryptantha).
