Fabaceae: Astragalus aridus (Locoweed)

Sand verbena (Abronia villosa var. villosa) & seed pods of Astragalus aridus (right).


Asteraceae: Gerraea canescens (Desert Sunflower)


Asteraceae: Encelia farinosa (Brittle Bush)

Asteraceae: Calycoseris wrightii (White Tackstem)--Photographed in 2008

The glistening, gland-tipped hairs (trichomes) on the stem of Calycoseris wrightii resemble minute translucent tacks. The Jepson Desert Manual (2002) describes the glands as "dark colored" for Calycoceris parryi and "pale" for C. wrightii.

The Colorful Blister Beetle (Lytta magister)

Mating pair on the sand, and vertically while feeding on minute desert poppy (Eschscholzia minutiflora).

Lytta magister feeding on a white forget-me-not (Cryptantha).


Hydrophyllaceae (Phacelia crenulata var. minutiflora)


Campanuaceae: Nemacladus (Threadstem): We saw one species--Possibly N. rubescens
